The fifth day of the fifth month (May 5) is Japanese Children’s Day or Kodomo no hi. It is a celebration of children’s happiness that has been observed in Japan for more than 1,000 years. In observance, families in Japan fly carp-shaped flags, or koinobori, one for each child in the family, and mochi rice cakes are served.
