Kids Voting USA is a non-profit and seemingly non-partisan (please correct me if I’m wrong on that) civics education program. Classroom activities are offered, and some local chapters provide for online voting by kids. Though I discovered this too late for participation this year, I think it’s interesting that they are sponsoring a political cartoon contest at this time when political cartoons are seen in decreasing number of papers. Satire is a wonderful form of expression for young adolescents who love to detect hypocrisy.
During one of my recent forays into high school, a young man stated, “we can’t vote, but we need to.” So, along with Marian Wright Edelman of the Children’s Defense Fund and Stand for Children, I also encourage those who can vote to keep youth needs in mind.
